Anne & David's story

Anniversary and birthday gifts to each other are no longer a challenge for David and Anne Patterson. "When we realized we had done enough ties, books and spa certificates, we decided to mark each special occasion with a gift of a charitable donation."

Two years ago, Anne had a milestone birthday, and David blessed her wish to have St. Michael's Hospital be the beneficiary of a very special gift.

But, a new challenge emerged. "With 23 (now 24) family members having life-saving and life-enhancing care at St. Michael's, which program should we choose?"

"When we realized we had done enough ties, books and spa certificates, we decided to mark each special occasion with a gift of a charitable donation."

Dr. Tony Graham and Foundation president Alayne Metrick identified three initiatives that were 'urgent and important' for St. Michael's. As a result, Anne and David decided to make a gift to support our Trauma program.

But, along the way, David and Anne discovered that St. Michael's had launched a Quality Program. "Quality grabbed our attention because we had initiated Quality in our company, trained our employees, and installed Quality processes in our practices. We knew that St. Michael's really understood Quality — and its statistical underpinnings — when Dr. Bob Howard talked about What Quality entails and about the commitment required by him as a CEO and by the Board to 'make it so'.

"Excitedly, we pledged three annual gifts — each to be matched by the Board — to encourage the launch and entrenchment of Quality programs at the hospital. Now we know that, no matter how many more family members (and friends) require care at St. Michael's, outcomes will continue to improve as Quality program advances are realized. That's a pretty good birthday gift.
