I never thought this would happen to me, but it did and I am so grateful that I ended up at St. Michael’s.
- Dominic Cristina
Dominic Cristina always had the same routine. He worked out three times a week for 90 minutes. But one day, when he started his exercise regimen with a little stretching, he felt a pain and tightness in the tops of his shoulders. He shrugged it off. But as the pain got lower, it was something he could no longer ignore. “I called my wife to tell her that I wasn’t feeling well and thought I should go home. Instead she drove me to the hospital and in that 45 minutes, it felt like my chest was in a vice grip.”
Tests confirmed that Dominic had suffered a heart attack. Later, an angiogram revealed that he had five blockages. He needed quadruple bypass surgery and was quickly transferred to St. Michael’s Hospital.
“I never thought this would happen to me, but it did and I am so grateful that I ended up at St. Michael’s.”
Dr. Subodh Verma performed the surgery in 2008 and now Dominic is back to his normal life and regular exercise again. "I never thought this would happen to me, but it did and I am so grateful that I ended up at St. Michael's," says Dominic. "I am pleased to give back in any way I can.”
And he is. Each year, Dominic and his family host the Cardiac Care Classic golf tournament to continue to raise funds and awareness for important heart and vascular research here at St. Michael's Hospital.
