Celebrate with Us

Thanks to you, our Inspire 2018 campaign is complete!

Imagine: 17 storeys of shining glass and steel rising up at the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets, packed with state-of-the-art space for critical care patients. Boasting eight oversized hybrid operating rooms and an expansive lobby for patients, their families and staff.

Imagine: ambulances rush from across the city to a twice-as-large Emergency Department, including an expanded trauma bay, for immediate lifesaving care. That's the future St. Michael's, thanks to your many, many gifts that have allowed us to surpass our $210 million goal and achieve a remarkable total of $235 million to complete Inspire 2018—our largest campaign to date.

St. Michael's has been long blessed with extraordinary volunteer fundraising leadership, and never has that been more evident than throughout our Inspire 2018 campaign.
— Alayne Metrick, Foundation President

The campaign kicked off in November of 2011 when the Government of Ontario announced its support for this much-needed project. Inspire 2018 would provide the additional funds to realize this transformation and support other urgent hospital priorities, including education and research. The campaign was underway! We were able to recruit an extraordinary team of fundraisers, led by campaign Co-Chairs Tony Arrell, John Cassaday, William Downe and John H. Tory (who stepped down following his election as mayor of Toronto), supported by Honorary Co-Chair Margaret McCain and a truly dedicated cabinet. All have been longtime leaders with the hospital foundation who have shown time and again their commitment to what makes St. Michael’s special.

St. Michael's is my hospital of choice. The physicians and staff are so warm and sensitive to your needs – it's a pleasure to support their work.
— Peggi, donor

The Inspire 2018 campaign has attracted gifts from across the spectrum of the St. Michael's family. For example, Peggi Milgram has given a number of gifts to recognize excellent care from St. Michael's, while Sara Ritchie is a first-time donor. Peggi, Sara and a multitude of other donors endorsed the essence of Inspire 2018, which is to give this great hospital the tools to save more lives.

During the early stages of Inspire 2018, the campaign cabinet secured a series of remarkable gifts from a large number of individuals, companies and foundations. The major naming gifts include:

  • Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower, $30 million
  • Element Financial Atrium and Way, $15 million
  • Slaight Family Emergency Department, $10 million
  • Tim and Frances Price Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit, $5 million
  • Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation Respirology Unit, $5 million
I was so impressed with my care here, on so many levels, that I really wanted to give back. Thanks St. Michael's!
— Sara, donor

All those who supported Inspire 2018 with gifts of every size are featured in this list. Thank you so much for helping transform St. Michael’s into Canada’s premier critical care hospital. View list

If you drive by on Queen Street you’ll see the frame of the tower climbing floor by floor to match and link into the 17-storey Cardinal Carter Wing. Less visible are the interior renovations to the Donnelly Wing, which will allow us to clear the Cardinal Carter lobby for the expanded Slaight Family Emergency Department—think of where the statue of St. Michael currently stands. The walk-in section of the Emergency will occupy the new Shuter Wing on the northeast corner of the campus—that’s right, the 1912 Shuter Wing will be demolished in 2018. The new two-storey base will accommodate future expansion upward.

On behalf of the campaign cabinet, the staff and physicians at St. Michael's, and most importantly, the hundreds of thousands of patients we treat each year, thank you to all of our donors for completing this historic campaign. Your generosity is outstanding: through your gifts, now and in the future, we will become the premier critical care hospital in Canada and save even more lives. Thank you!

St. Michaels is so very grateful for these extraordinary gifts, which will transform our hospital. I'm also proud that 100% of my physician colleagues supported this campaign — for the third time. Every gift counts and makes a difference. Thank you to all who made a commitment to the future of St. Michael's!
— Dr. Bob Howard, President and CEO
