Donor Profile: The Slaight Family

On March 7, 2017, the Slaight Family Foundation announced a donation of $1 million to Dr. Janet Smylie, a physician and researcher at St. Michael’s Hospital who specializes in Indigenous health issues. Their generous gift will directly support Dr. Smylie and her team at the Centre for Urban Health Solutions in addressing the health inequities Canada’s Indigenous populations experience by bridging the gap between knowledge and practice. Specifically, they will develop a program to train health-care workers to recognize and overcome racial biases that can create inequities in health-care delivery.

St. Michael’s is one of 15 organizations to benefit from a $12 million donation from the Slaight Family Foundation to groups working to improve the physical, mental and social well-being of Canada’s Indigenous peoples. Their gift is believed to be one of the largest charitable donations ever in Canada aimed at Indigenous communities.

In response to the announcement of their recent gift, Foundation President Alayne Metrick said, "You continue to be a shining example of what investing in our shared community can accomplish, with your numerous gifts to this hospital for the Emergency Department, therapeutic endoscopy program and your most recent investment in Indigenous issues, including important work by scientist and researcher Dr. Janet Smylie."

Later this spring, the first portion of the new Slaight Family Emergency Department will open at St. Michael's. This complex renovation project is largely possible thanks to the Slaight family's remarkable gift of $10 million to the Foundation’s Inspire 2018 campaign.

The Slaight family’s early show of confidence in our campaign to transform St. Michael’s into Canada’s premier critical care hospital generated excitement and interest, spurring the momentum that helped us achieve our $210 million fundraising goal ahead of schedule and raise $25 million over our target.

In a statement of gratitude to the Slaight Family Foundation, Dr. Robert Howard, St. Michael’s President and CEO said, "Over the years, your philanthropic leadership has been integral in helping St. Michael’s become a world-class institution serving a diverse, vibrant and growing city. You are among our most generous supporters and we are extraordinarily grateful. The work that we do at St. Michael’s, which makes me so proud, simply wouldn’t be possible without the outstanding support of loyal friends like you."

Thank you to the Slaight Family Foundation. Our continued success is made possible by your ongoing support.
