For more than 30 years, Agnes Faraci had her finger on the pulse of patient care. As a nurse, she travelled around the globe, working at hospitals in Madrid, Munich and Rome. She volunteered to help doctors care for the less fortunate in medical missions to Central and South America. While a nurse in the naval reserve, she trained medics. And she spent time at every single hospital in Toronto. "In all my years of nursing, I've always considered St. Michael's home," says Agnes. "I can say with certainty that it's the number one hospital out there."
Denise Allick was just two weeks shy of her retirement and at work when she started getting what she describes as "a very uncomfortable feeling" between her shoulders. She recounts, "In the previous few weeks, I would get the occasional sharp pain. It would not last very long so I did not worry about it. This time, however, the pain felt different. I went home and told my husband Lester 'I'm not feeling great I'm going to lie down.' After that, I don't remember anything." Lester was later told by the attending cardiologist that they could not do anything more for his wife because the blockage in her arteries could not be dissolved using medication. As a result, arrangements were made to have her transported to St. Michael's where a team of physicians had the skills to perform an angioplasty to clear the blockages in the arteries of her heart.

“It was a spring day like any other,” she recalls, “and I spent the majority of it in and out of the yard cleaning, planting and watering.” As evening closed in, Tina began tidying up – and slipped. The pain and swelling to her left leg was instantaneous, and as the numbness set in, she knew something was terribly wrong. Concerned that her condition was worsening, Tina’s doctor arranged for an ambulance to take her to St. Michael’s – she had severe vascular damage.
The ambulance lurches to a halt and the paramedics pound up the stairs. But tonight they are too late—another unlikely addict has succumbed to Toronto’s painkiller epidemic. Don’t judge: this could be any neighbourhood in any city. Dr. Adam Quastel, Physician Lead for the St. Michael’s Hospital Addictions Team, is on the front line. He says people are dying because prescription pain killers for chronic pain are addictive. “This is a citywide problem,” he notes, “Our patients are your friends, mothers, grandparents, professionals—people from all walks of life.”
