“I was bumped from one doctor to another,” says Sandra, but no one could discover what was going on. Sandra was referred to Dr. Michael Cusimano, a neurosurgeon at St. Michael’s. As soon as she came into his office, he recognized her condition as acromegaly. It results when the pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone. People with acromegaly experience soft tissue swelling visibly resulting in enlargement of the hands, feet, nose, lips and ears and, if not treated, complications like hypertension, diabetes and heart and kidney failure.
